The Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Green Chemical Product Technology was approved for establishment by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology in September 2004. In the same year, it received joint support from the Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Bureau. The laboratory is affiliated with the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at South China University of Technology, relying on the doctoral program in first-level discipline “Chemical Engineering and Technology,” the national key discipline of Chemical Engineering, the postdoctoral research station, and Guangdong provincial key disciplines. In December 2007, the laboratory passed the acceptance review organized jointly by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology and the Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Bureau. It received “Excellent” ratings in the provincial key laboratory evaluations organized by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology in 2012 and 2017, and was rated “Good” in 2019.
The laboratory has established eight research teams: Chemical Process Systems Engineering and Product Engineering, Adsorption and Reaction Separation Engineering, Fine Chemicals, Chemical Technology, Green Catalysis and Energy, Nanomaterials and Nanocatalysis, Functional Chemical Technology, and Biomass Chemical Engineering. Currently, it has 48 full-time research staff members, including 32 professors, 15 associate professors, and 1 researcher with a mid-level professional title; 43 hold a Ph.D. degree. Six members are recipients of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars. The laboratory also hosts more than 30 doctoral candidates, over 100 master’s students, and more than 10 postdoctoral researchers. The academic backgrounds of the members span chemical engineering, applied chemistry, industrial catalysis, environmental chemical engineering, new materials, pharmaceutical engineering, biotechnology, and computational simulation, enabling the laboratory to conduct integrated research on key scientific and technological challenges in chemical science and engineering.
Each year, the laboratory undertakes more than 10 national-level research projects and over 60 provincial, ministerial, and industry-funded projects, with annual research funding exceeding 20 million RMB. In recent years, the laboratory has achieved a series of fundamental and applied research outcomes in the field of green chemical product technology, including publishing more than 100 high-quality research papers and obtaining over 30 authorized national invention patents annually.
The laboratory has built two influential innovation platforms— the “Chemical Product Synthesis and Process Equipment Laboratory” and the “High-Precision Instrument Analysis Laboratory”—which play a significant role, particularly in South China, in enhancing the laboratory’s capacity for independent innovation. The construction and operation of these platforms follow principles of openness, fairness, and transparency, with unified planning, modular development, dedicated management, and open sharing with service-oriented and fee-based access, thereby improving scientific planning and utilization efficiency.
The laboratory has become an important research and development base for new, green, and fine chemicals in South China, as well as a training base for high-level interdisciplinary talent.
