In 1986, Prof. ZhiCheng Cai get his B.Sc.in Chemistry, and in 1989,get the M.Sc.in Organic Chemistry, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, P.R. China; 1996, Ph.D. in Carbohydrate Chemistry, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland; 1996-1999, Postdoctoral Fellow, Institute of Quantum Electronics, ETH-Zurich; 2000-2006, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, 2006-present Associate Professor of Chemistry, University of Houston.
Research interest is centered on surface functionalization of biomaterials. In particular, He has developed novel methods for biofunctionalization of silicon substrates with a high stability and efficiency. Some of the work has been published in 50 papers, covering the area of organic synthesis, self-assembly, organic materials chemistry, organic thin films, AFM, STM, nanomaterials, and nanopatterning. One US patent has been issued and five are pending. Over $2.2 million research funding were received from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, the Welch Foundation and other funding agencies. He has extensive collaboration with medical doctors and researchers at the Texas Medical Center.
