On January 12-13, 2016, the first Urban Design Day (UDD) of South China—Torino Collaboration Lad was successfully held in South China University of Technology (SCUT). Ms. Laura Egoli--Consul General of Italy in Guangzhou, Prof. ZHU Min—Vice President of SCUT, and Prof. Enrico Macci—Vice Rector for Research at Politecnico di Torino were present to witness the Opening Ceremony of the UDD and made Opening speaches respectively. The depute dean of School of Architecture, SCUT, Prof. SUN Yimin, who also is the director of the Lad from China, as well as Associate Prof. Michele Bonino—director of the Lad from Italy, representatives from International Office, School of Architecture, School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, over 100 teachers and students attended the Ceremony.
On January 12, urban planners and scholars from four Italian important historical and cultural cities, including Torino, Venezia, Pisa, Bologna, and practitioners of Planning and Construction Department from Zhongshan, Dongguan, Zhaoqing and Jiangmen, four developed cities in Guangdong, met together to discuss the issue of urban design, to compare their own identities and experiences. In the afternoon Networking Workshop, graduate students from both sides led by their tutors showed a research exhibition based on the deep analysis of urban design cases in Guangdong and Italian cities.
On January 13, the Second Committee Conference of Business Consulting of the Collaboration Lad was held. South Guangdong Institute of Architectural Design, CAPOL, Magneti Marelli (Italy), STMicroelectronics (Shenzhen), and many other important enterprises attended the conference, discussed aspects of technology research, development and students training, together with Assistant Principal, Prof. SU Cheng and Ms. Laura Egoli. In the afternoon, the Lad held a meeting for development and planning, discussed the annual joint-reserch and budget plan in 2016, as well as postgraduate exchange and PhD dual degree program.
The UDD offers a platform for bidirectional exchange between two urban cultures. It will be an opportunity for experts from both Countries to dialogue on the challenges of “urban design” in a sustainable and creative way. Guangzhou TV, Guangzhou Daily,Newsgd.com, Dayoo.com and other medias reported the whole activity. Representatives from Guangzhou - Italy Chamber of Commerce, British Chambers of Commerce, Consulate General of Swiss Confederation in Guangzhou, etc., attended the activity.
In addition, On January 11, Vice-Governor, Mr. XU Ruisheng met the Italian representatives, who would attend the UDD. He hoped that bidirectional universities could make full use of resources on education and research, promote future exchanges and cooperations.
