From Dec. 8th to 19th,Prof. Peter Bosselmann and 13 master students from University of California,Berkeley (UC Berkeley), visited our school and took part in the joint designworkshop with tutors and students from our school.
UC Berkeley—SCUT Design Workshop is one of the key international programs inour school, convened by Prof. SUN Yimin from our school and Prof. PeterBosselmann from UC Berkeley. Prof. Bosselmann who is invited by our school forthe Famous Professor Project of the Ministry of Education,hasfollowed up urban issues in the Pearl River Delta for a long time, possessesrich experience on the transformation of large-scale metropolitan area.
The site of the workshop locates in the former Jiangmen Cement Plant, on the shore of Pengjiang River, Jiangmen city. Theparticipants had to investigate the cases of how to transform and reuseindustrial heritage, how to combine the industrial heritage and the surroundingurban life, under the process of urban renewal. Students were divided into sixgroups according to different research topics, including studies of planning,landscape, macro-scale of water system and micro-scale of architecturerenovation. Each group had to experience many times public assessments throughthe site research, conceptual design, interim results and so on. After twoweeks of intense work, they presented the final report with abundant fruit.
Officers and planners from Jiangmen urban planning bureau and design institute,who supported the projects, Dr. LIU Dongyang, anthropologist and planningresearchers, Mr. HUANG Juzheng, the chief editor of ARCHITECT magazine, Mr. LIUYichun, the host of Deshaus Atelier, who were invited by Prof. SUN Yimin,attended the final report. All jury members gave lots of important commentswhich made significant impact for the future research. The result of theworkshop will be collated and published.
