ZHANG Zheng (Grade 2011, Architecture) Won Top Award at the Second “Asian Architectural Rookie Competition”

Recently, the second “Asian Architectural Rookie Competition” was held by Architectural Institute of Japan in Osaka, Japan. The design work “Inside Out ,Outside in” done by ZHANG Zheng from our school (grade 2011, tutored by ZHONG Guanqiu) won the second prize in the competition, which is the best results among all the foreign participants.
The design is a dwelling for a writer and the family that needs meditating space, nature, as well as the contact with the society. It is inspired by traditional view of privacy and openness, the vague boundary between inside and outside, and different functional rooms. The house is surrounded by plants (new shoots from inside to outside), sunshine and fresh air (naturally penetrate from outside into inside).
24 competitors from Japan, China, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, India and so on, totally of 9 countries, took part in the competition, went through a strict selection in their own countries. ZHANG Zheng had an outstanding performance among almost 400 domestic participants in the “2013 CHINA Architectural Rookie Competition” in August, which allowed her gain the qualification to enter the finals on behalf of China, along with the other 5 students from Southeast University, Hong Kong University, Tianjin University, Xian University of Architecture and Technology. The finals is for all the students from different countries without differ between Japanese and foreigners.
This is an international competition set for architectural students from grade 1 to grade 3, aims to find out talented young architects, improve the architectural educational communication among different universities in Asia.
