In order to recall the two great architectural educators’(LONG Qingzhong and CHEN Boqi) brilliant contribution to education and Lingnan architecture of our country, School of Architecture of South China University of Technology (SCUT) held “the 110th anniversary symposia of the birth of LONG Qingzhong and CHEN Boqi” at No.6 building, on the morning of Nov.7th. People who attended the symposia were Prof. HE Jingtang (Academician of China Engineering Academy), Prof. KAZUNARI Sakamoto (Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT)), Prof. OKUYAMA Shinichi (Tokyo Institute of Technology), experts and scholars from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji University and Harbin Institute of Technology, XIAO Yiqiang (Vice president of School of Architecture of SCUT), SI Jumin (Secretary of the party committee of School of Architecture of SCUT), graduate Students, assistants and family representatives of LONG Qingzhong, PAN Xiaoxian (The writer of THE ARCHITECT CHEN BOQI), representatives of our school teachers and students. The total number of the participant was more than 50. Our school Executive Vice-President SUN Yimin presided over the symposia.
The symposia began with recalling the memory of LONG and CHEN about their work and life through old photos. And then, Academician HE thanked to the coming of the participant and emphasized that we had to carry on the great and rigorous scholarship of LONG and CHEN, work together, carry forward the Huanan and Lingnan architectural education. As alumnus, Prof. KAZUNARI Sakamoto recalled the historical roots between SCUT and TIT. He said there were 7 teachers of School of Architecture of SCUT studied in TIT since 1930, including LONG and CHEN, and when these teachers came back, they carry on the good mind and advanced teaching idea to our school, which makes the two schools has many similarities. What’s more, he hoped a deeper extension and communication between our school and theirs.
Prof. GU Daqing from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the writer of THE ARCHITECT CHEN BOQI explained the life and architectural idea of LONG and CHEN. Many of the participant shared the cherish times with LONG and CHEN. The symposia took place in a harmonious atmosphere. The academic complex of the elder left a deep impression to the new generation.
LONG and CHEN are the representatives of the first generation of architects. Both of them studied at Department of Architecture TIT, and then taught at Chongqing University, Tongji University, Sun Yat-sen University and SCUT. LONG was the innovator of South China Architectural History and Theory disciplines, founded architecture fire science and architecture culturology. As one of the first batch of D Arch mentors, LONG cultivated a large number of outstanding architects of history and theory. As the innovator of the subtropical architectural research and creation, CHEN initiated the mission around architectural theory and design of subtropical district, emphasized the combination of academic research and design practice. Both of them made great contributions for exploring the Lingnan architecture, initiating and developing our school disciplines.
