On June 20 to 22, 2014, the 8th International Association for China Planning (IACP) Conference was held at SCUT, co-organized by IACP. Prof. HE Jingtang and more than 200 experts and scholars from America, Korea, Japan and so on, totally 9 countries, came together to explore on the theme of “New Regeneration: New Model and New Practice”.
Prof. John Landis, University of Pennsylvania, Prof. Robert Bullard, Dean of School of Public Affairs, Texas Southern University, “Father of Environmental Justice”, Senior Engineer LIN Jun, Chief Planner of Guangzhou City Planning Bureau, Senior Engineer DENG xiaobing, Deputy Chief Planner of Guangzhou Development District, Prof. ZHAO wanmin, Dean of Urban Planning and Design of the Institute in Chongqing University, gave keynote speeches at the conference. There are 36 parallel sessions and about 170 scholars were invited to present on the topics of historical and theoretical basis, public participation, housing and regional development, human resources and economic development, urban planning and design, transportation and land use modeling, cases-study of the best and the worst international practice, analytical methods, climate change etc. Experts were generally recognized that the people-oriented city model emphasizes the effect of public participation in the planning process, called for the researchers and practitioners of city planning should pay more attention to the points of social equity, environment, energy, ecology, historical preservation during planning and design process.
The Second International Dean/Chair’s Forum on Urban and Planning was also held during the conference. Deans and directors from over 20 domestic and foreign universities attended the forum, including Harvard University, University of Washington, UC Berkeley, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Chongqing University, Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Renmin University of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University etc., to discuss the educational issues as well as constructive suggestions.
The conference is for discussion on issues of human, economy, society, transportation, land, environment raised in the process of urban and rural development. Since 2007, the conference is held every year, created a platform for communication within experts and scholars.
