“Hurry up, or too late…” This was the most popular message in the students’ QQ message and Wechat group of our School of Architecture, SCUT, on Dec. 10th. It was the opening for the ARCHI—NEERING DESIGN (A.N.D) Exhibition and Sino-Japanese Structural Architecture Forum that was held at NO.27 Building, attracted nearly crowed 200 audiences in the lecture hall.
The forum lasted almost 4 hours, compactly and orderly. Chinese and Japanese experts gave excellent lectures. The former Chair of Architecture Institute of Japan (AIJ), Prof. Masao SAITOH, began his talking with a mountain in Switzerland to refer the creation, imagination, structure and reality. From ancient Rome to nowadays, he showed us the magic of structure, highlighted the importance of imagination in his summary of “the Innovation of Architecture Engineering”. The Associate Prof. Jingxiang ZHU from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, used the example of his practice in mountain areas, expressed his understanding of “Structural Innovation from Construction”. The Japanese architect, Prof. Souhei IMAMURA, brought us “From Inspiration to Construction”, feasted audiences’ minds. Prof. SUN Yimin, the deputy dean of the School of Architecture of SCUT, focused on the topic of “From Form Seeking to Logical Interpretation”, emphasized the beauty of light and simple. Finally, the Japanese timber architect, Noriaki YAMADA, introduced the features of timber structure on all aspects.
In the same morning, participants witnessed the opening ceremony of the ARCHI—NEERING DESIGN exhibition in No. 27 building. The exhibition concludes architectural models from AIJ and the School of Architecture, SCUT, with nine main themes, to study the relationship between architecture and engineering design. From a historic point of view, it presents the creative idea behind technologies, as well as the combination of engineering rationality, environmental quality and spatial aesthetics through modeling important modern architectures. The exhibition had a domestic tour in Japan, then moved to Taiwan and Shanghai, won a global reputation.
