Course: Theory and practice of soundscape
Detail:
Soundscape is acoustic environment with emphasis on how it is perceived and understood by an individual and/or by a society. The concept of soundscape was created seeking for better understanding of sonic environment. Its spectrum is shifted more in the region of subjective sonic environment, but still covers physical aspect of sonic environment. Thus this course starts from the basic acoustics related to noise control. Then problems of noise control engineering are discussed on historical and social facts. The concept of soundscape indirectly derives from John Cage’s philosophy of music. Therefore a brief history of contemporary music is required to understand soundscape concept. The concept of design needs be discussed when soundscape design is undertaken. Examples of soundscape researches and soundscape designing having been conducted in Japan are presented. During the course, students carry out soundwalk and sound mapping.
