SEC Students Won the highest-level Award in Challenge Cup

Challenging for three decades and pursuing dreams for a new era. On May 26th, in the fifteenth Challenge Cup Guangdong Graduate Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest, eight students won special awards for their work of On the Occasion of Turnaround and Rural Revitalization: Poverty Alleviation through Tourism Survey based on 1159 Villagers in 103 Villages in Guangdong Province, including Zhang Lingyuan, Kuang Yingqi, Lin Bin, Liao Yilun, Wang Hengli, Chen Xueling, Zhang Yangyang and Xu Siqi.

The final contest was held at the Foshan Institute of Science and Technology on the morning of the 25th May. Zhang Guangjun, the deputy governor of Guangdong Province, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. The provincial Party committee, provincial education department and relevant leading officials of Foshan government and more than 3,000 stuffs from 116 participating schools in Guangdong Province attended the opening ceremony.

During the competition, Deputy President Li Zheng went to contest station for visiting SEC stuffs, encouraging students to tap their potential, be aggressive and show a good spirit of SCUT through solid foundation and rigorous attitude.

On the Occasion of Turnaround and Rural Revitalization: Poverty Alleviation through Tourism Survey based on 1159 Villagers in 103 Villages in Guangdong Province was directed by Professor Wu Zhicai. It highlights the approaches to integration of the government, market and villagers to achieve sustainable development of rural revitalization. It took team members two years to produce a investigation report with over 350 thousand characters by launching the campaign called “Go and Investigate inside Guangdong Villages”, and mobilizing nearly 200 college students to investigate 1,159 villagers in 103 typical villages in Guangdong Province. And this campaign was therefore awarded “Top 10 College Social Practice with Tourism Influences in China 2008”. What’s more, the decision message resulted from the investigation report named Guangdong Rural Revitalization Strategy through Tourism was adopted by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism. It made encouraging progress by developing practices for rural revitalization combining with cases of Boluo and Shangliang in Huizhou, Guangdong Province. This team based on practices in Guangdong, and tried to explore other paths for rural revitalization across the whole country, especially in less developed western regions like Yunnan Province and Guizhou Province.

 In addition, the Investigation Report on the Transformation of Traditional Manufacturing in the Internet Age—A Study on Chemical Industry also won the special prize in Challenge Cup, directed by Associate Professor Yu Xiaojian, with students of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at its core members.
