SCUT stands 2nd in nationwide university rankings for patent awards

According to the 2017 Chinese University Rankings for Patent Awards  that was recently announced by the China Academy of Management Science, SCUT  earned the second highest rating in receiving patent awards among all  institutions of higher learning in China.

The rankings calculated major patent awards issued by the State  Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) from  2007 to 2016, and SCUT, honored one China Patent Gold Award, 22 China Patent  Merit Awards, and one MOE Patent Award, received an overall rating of 90.39,  following Tsinghua University as the second best on the nationwide list.

During the last ten years, the number of invention patents granted to SCUT  has explosively grown from 132 in 2007 to 1,107 in 2016. In 2010, the university  for the first time hit the record of filing 1,000 patent applications. Last year  it filed 3,323 applications, and 2,020 applications were granted.

The strong growth has continued this year. From January to April, 1,199  applications were filed as 942 patents, including 463 invent patents, were  issued.

Up till now, SCUT has filed 262 patent applications under the International  Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). The high performance made the university rank  32nd among all educational institutions around the world and 3rd among Chinese  universities.

Meanwhile, SCUT is playing a leading role in Guangdong province’s effort of  promoting scientific inventions. According to statistics announced by the  Guangdong Intellectual Property Office, in 2016 the number of SCUT’s granted  invention patents accounted for 37.1% of the total amount contributed by  universities in the province.
