Objectives
This program aims to cultivate high-level professionals who are morally, intellectually and physically developed and adaptable to the needs of modernization, the world and the future. Students are required to be equipped with good musical theoretical training, solid and systematic specialized knowledge and strong capabilities of teaching, researching and musical performances.

Cultivation Mode
Students are required to work out a plan in the first two weeks after registration and complete all the required credits following the plan. Students are bound to participate in the stage assessment in the third semester according to Master's Degree Graduate Medium-Term Screening Methods of South China University of Technology and complete the required social practices before the end of the third semester. Requirements for credits: students under this program are required to acquire total credits no less than 50, among which a minimum of 34 credits for degree courses (26 for compulsory courses, 8 for optional courses), 1 credit for literature review and thesis proposal, 2 credits for academic activities (required attendance of 10 academic conferences, among which 2 must be of interdisciplinary) and 13 for dissertation.
 
Dissertation
Students should start writing thesis proposals in the third semester. Students of different MA programs in the School of Art are to meet different requirements: students majoring in fields of Solfeggio Teaching and Method, Vocal Music Art and Theory Research and  Wind Band Performing Art and Theory Research are required to hold a degree concert after completing all the credits required. The concert is graded on 100 basis whereas a score of 85 is a pass; Students majoring in fields of Solfeggio Teaching and Method and History of Western Music/ American Music Research, students are required to publish officially at least one academic paper with South China University of Technology signed as the first unit, the student signed as the first author or the supervisor signed as the first author and the student the second before applying for the theses defense with a completion of all required degree courses and part of optional courses; Students of Dance Aesthetics/ Dance Drama Music Research are also required to publish officially at least one academic paper with South China University of Technology signed as the first unit, the student signed as the first author or the supervisor signed as the first author and the student the second before applying for the theses defense; On the completion of theses, defense will be arranged to according to Rules for the Implementation of Graduation Degrees of South China University of Technology and Regulations of the Applications for Thesis Defense of South China University of Technology.
