In classical Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) experiments, it has been shown that the instability growth is limited by surface tension during the linear stage, where the growth is exponential in time. In this paper, we mathematically verify this physical result based on linearized motion equations. More precisely, we prove that the largest growth rate of linear RT instability will go to zero, as the coefficient of surface tension $\kappa$ increases from $0$ to a threshold $\vartheta_{\mm{c}}$.
