报告摘要: Topological methods have proven to be useful in studying nonlinear problems especially when analytical solutions are not available. In the 1920s, S. Lefschetz generalized the well-known Brouwer fixed point theorem for continuous self mappings on compact manifolds. While Lefschetz theory is powerful in proving existence of fixed points, it does not account for multiplicities. In 1927, J. Nielsen introduced a more subtle fixed point theory, now known as Nielsen fixed point theory, which gives a lower bound for the minimal number of fixed points under homotopy (perturbation). These fixed point theories were developed in a topological setting where self maps are usually globally defined on compact spaces. In this talk, I will discuss how Nielsen fixed point theory may be used in the setting of locally defined maps on non-compact spaces, suitable for problems in nonlinear analysis.
