报告摘要：

   Onewould often like to be able to check if two topological spaces areequivalent (homeomorphic).

 Historicallypeople have used invariants such as the fundamental group andhomology to tell apart nice

locallysimple spaces such as manifolds and simplicial complexes. Recently many questions have arisen in

modernmathematics concerning spaces which are locally complicated suchas attractors and boundaries.  

We discusshow, in low dimensions, that homology is very poor atdistinguishing between locally

complicatedspaces while the fundamental group is often a perfect invariant bydiscussing an interesting

menagerieof examples.
