We consider the noise-induced transitions in therandomly perturbed discrete logistic map from a linearly stableperiod orbit consisting of $T$ periodic points. We generalizethe transition path theory to the discrete-timecontinuous-space stochastic process to attack this problem. As afirst criterion of quantifying the relative instability among $T$periodic points, we compare the distribution of the last passagelocations in the transitions from the whole periodic orbit to aprescribed set far away. The second criterion is based on thecapacity of the transition paths associated with each periodicpoint.Both criteria utilise the reactive probability current in thetransition path theory.Our numerical results for the logistic mapreveal the transition mechanism of escaping from the stable periodicorbit and identify which periodic point is more prone to losestability so as to make successful transitions under randomperturbations.

Dr Xiang Zhou received his BSc from Peking Universityand PhD from Princeton University. Before joining City University in2012, he worked as a research associate at Princeton University andBrown University. His major research interests include noise-inducedtransitions and stochastic systems, the study of rare events and itsapplications in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering and finance.
