The lecture will begin with an overview of the Maths taught at Cardiff at BSc and MSc level before focussing on the topic of Operational Research. The main concepts behind Operational Research will be introduced and examples in scheduling, game theory and routing problems will be given. It will be shown how mathematical concepts and ideas can be used to make significant savings in industry and other applications. The concept of complexity will be introduced and it will be demonstrated that some problems cannot be solved exactly in a reasonable amount of time and therefore approximation methods and heuristics are more appropriate. Many of these are based on nature, for example ant colony optimisation and genetic algorithms.
