Time:2025.10.17(Friday)11:10-12:00

Venue:G2-101, Guangzhou International Campus, South China University of Technology

Abstract:

Professor Susan Gourvenec will share some thoughts on offshore geotechnical challenges of the energy transition and some current research working towards solutions. The presentation focusses on the imperative for a step change and innovation in offshore site identification and characterisation, and finishes with an example of integrating innovation in site characterisation with innovation in anchoring and mooring design.

Resume:

Professor Susan Gourvenec is Deputy Director of Southampton Marine && Maritime Institute at the University of Southampton. She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) and Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies - Intelligent & Resilient Ocean Engineering. She is a specialist of offshore geotechnical engineering, which involves developing technologies and methodologies to characterise the engineering properties of the seabed and advance geotechnical design of infrastructure that is founded on or in the seabed. She has co-authored 1the text books “Offshore Geotechnical Engineering”and "Intermediate Offshore Foundations", chaired and co-edited the proceedings of international conferences, and authored over 100 international scientific papers. She is a Member and past Chair of the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) committee responsible for developing industry standards for marine soil investigation and offshore geotechnical design. She has an established track record of International Standards development for offshore infrastructure through roles with the ISO, BSl, and APl.
