Biography

  • Professor Jianhui Xia joined SCUT’s faculty in 2018 after spending 18 years working as a senior research scientist at the 3M company in its US headquarter. He led cross-functional & multi-national teams and helped to position 3M as the leading company in the world in the field of optically clear adhesives. He developed new technologies and successfully launched products with combined sales over one billion dollars. For his outstanding technical contributions, he is the recipient of seven 3M company's Golden Step award and six 3M's Circle of Technical Excellence and Innovation award. Before working at 3M, his graduate research was on atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) under the supervision of Professor Krzysztof Matyjaszewski. His work of homogeneous ATRP was published in the journal of Science where he reported the first well-controlled radical polymerization with polydispersity as low as 1.05. He developed readily available ATRP catalyst which is now widely used by researchers all over the world. He is the author or co-author of over 40 US patents/patent applications and more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including a seminal review on ATRP with over 11000 citations.

Research Interests

  • Prof. Jianhui Xia’s research focus is on developing advanced materials for applications of practical importance. Specific areas include adhesives for display and electronics, advanced visco-elastomers with designed structures, and novel photo-curing materials and applications. A variety of industry-relevant materials (acrylics, silicone, urethane, epoxy) are prepared and studied. Advanced synthetic methods such as controlled /living radical polymerization are utilized to prepare novel materials and help explore the structure-property relationship.
