Academic Visit of Prof. Gamini Seneviratne from National Institute of Fundamental Studies

time: 2018-06-29

Prof. Gamini Seneviratne, a senior research professor from National Institute of Fundamental Studies, had visited School of Food Science and Engineering from the end of May to the middle of June, 2018. During his stay, Prof. Seneviratne has visited around research platforms and laboratories of our school.

On June 8th, Prof. Seneviratne presented an academic report entitled “Microbial biofilm-based biofertilizers: concept and applications” in the Dongtang Hall of Building No. 13. The seminar was hosted by Dr. Zhenbo Xu. Nowadays, genomics and bioinformatics analysis has gained interest on food microbiological research. However, it is easy to lead inappropriate analysis and indistinct results due to gene base containing the complex interaction. In the seminar, as an example of biofilm-based fertilizers, Prof. Seneviratne explained in detail how to reasonably use biomolecular networks to visualize the data after obtaining a large amount of data, excavating the interaction of microbes in various combinations.

After the seminar, teachers and students had a deep and insightful discussion on bioinformatics analysis, realizing the necessity and importance of cross-application in modern scientific research. Prof. Seneviratne believes this academic visit would promote future international exchanges and collaboration between both sides. (by Zerong Lu)
