Prof. Shirtliff Visited Our School

On April 19thand May 2nd 2017,Prof. Shirtliff, a full Professor from University of Maryland, had visited School of Food Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology, and presented two public seminars with the topic as Concern from Foodborne Microbes Biofilmand Development and Application of Food Safety Inspection Technology.

Prof. Shirtliff was invited by Prof. Lin Li, Prof. Bing Li and Dr. Zhenbo Xu from School of Food Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology. And his work focuses on the biofilm of the microorganisms which earns him the reputation of the related fields.

During the seminars, Prof. Shirtliff shared the principle of biofilm, the present situation of the biofilm research (especially on Staphylococcus aureus biofilm), current rapid detection methods (ELISA, LAMP etc.) for microorganism of different states with the audience, as well as its application on foodborne pathogens. And then he employed a video of the in vivo invasion and virulence of Staphylococcus aureus, making the graduate know that the international forefront of detection methods and broadening their horizon.

After that Prof. Shirtliff answered the students’ questions and gave his advices about how to deal with the difficulties they came across in their researches. Both Prof. Shirtliff and the audience found it meaningful to attend the lecture. (by Jian Miao)
