The 2nd World Conference on Recent Development in Sugar Technologies was held in Guangzhou, China from December 9th to 11th, 2009. The Conference hosted by the South China University of Technology (SCUT), sponsored by the United States Sugar Technology Center and Guangzhou Sugarcane Industry Research Institute was convened successfully in the Humanities Building of the SCUT. More than 100 experts and scholars from over 10 various countries and areas such as the US, Japan, Germany, China, Chinese Taipei, etc attended the Conference. And it received more than 100 papers in total.

Li Lin, the chairman and vice-chancellor of the SCUT, gave a welcome speech in behalf of our university. Subsequently, Chen Xin ,the deputy director of Guangdong Science and Technology Department, as well as Yang Dahang, the vice-chairman of China National Light Industry Council, deliver their speech. After that, the national authorities in the field of sugar cane ,such as Yan Weimin, the secretary-general China Sugar Association ,and Zhou Dongji ,who is the former superintendent of the United States Sugar Cane Research Institute and the chairman of CTI  Sugar Technology Company, Pro. Michael Saska of Louisiana State University, Pro. Yu Shujuan of the SCUT, gave their wonderful reports.

The symposium provided a forum for the discussion of sugar industry aspects of new technologies. Topics covered include Energy-saving emission reduction sugar industry, sugar cane sugar refinery automation, refined sugar technology, separation technology, sugar auxiliary agents, sugarcane breeding, sugar by-product of high-value-based applications, etc. This international conference provided a flat form of communion and performance on academy, technology and equipment for the colleges and universities, research institutes and enterprises majoring in the sugar industry. The conference was successfully held, which collectively indicated the advantages and characteristics of our college on this aspect. Furthermore, it has strengthened the academic affiliation and research collaboration of sugar technology between our college and the counterparts around the world. It had a significant meaning to improve the academic level of sugar technology in our college and would expand the fame of our college.
