On December 4, 2023, the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences issued a notice praising outstanding organizations and individuals in the 2023 "College Students in Action" ecological and environmental science popularization activities. In the 2023 "College Students in Action" ecological and environmental science popularization activities, our School's Green Wishes Service Team performed exceptionally well, bringing ecological and environmental protection knowledge to rural farmers and community residents, spreading environmental protection concepts. They were awarded the titles of "2023 'College Students in Action' Demonstration Team" and "Outstanding Team in Guangdong Province" by the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences. The team's guiding teacher, Professor Lu Guining, was honored "Outstanding Guidance Teacher" and the team leader, Zheng Zhiwen, received an "Outstanding Volunteer" award.

Green Wishes Service Team Introduction

Green Wishes Service Team was established concurrently with the Youth Volunteer Service Department of the School of Environment and Energy at South China University of Technology, and it has a history of more than ten years. Adhering to the philosophy of "dedication, friendship, mutual assistance, and progress", the Green Wishes Service Team is committed to environmental science popularization and volunteer activities in the field of environmental protection. Since 2013, the team has actively participated in annual events such as "College Students in Action" ecological and environmental science popularization activities (formerly "College Student Volunteers' Rural Environmental Protection Science Popularization Action") and "Three Visits to the Countryside" summer social practice activities. They have accumulated rich practical experience and achieved outstanding performance in multiple activities. In the 2021 and 2022 editions of "College Students in Action", the team received national and provincial honors from the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences and Guangdong Society for Environmental Sciences.

Project Introduction

In the 2023 "College Students in Action", the Green Wishes Service Team continued its outstanding performance from previous years, conducting a 5-day environmental science popularization social practice activity. The activities included environmental theme wall painting, scenic area plastic cleanup, scenic area ecological research, environmental symposium, and environmental science popularization booth. Through diverse forms of promotion and collaboration, the team aimed to raise awareness and active participation of community residents in environmental issues.

On the first day of the activity, team members gathered at the volunteer service station of Lecong Volunteer Alliance with enthusiasm to plan and design environmental theme wall paintings. The team conveyed the importance of environmental protection to the community, hoping to inspire environmental awareness and action among residents, and raise awareness about urban agriculture and green living.

Subsequently, the team went to the scenic area to clean up garbage, actively interacted with tourists and residents, learn their views and intentions regarding environmental protection, and conveyed relevant information and the importance of environmental protection.

To deepen their understanding of the local environmental situation in Lecong, the team invited leaders from local companies including Zhongtian Environmental Technology Co., Ltd., Dahao Sheng Environmental Equipment Co., Ltd., and the Ecological Environment Bureau of Lecong Town to conduct an environmental theme symposium. They discussed the challenges and strategies for environmental protection in Lecong. This exchange not only deepened the team's understanding of the local environmental situation but also provided valuable guidance and insights. Team members recognized that environmental protection is a complex and long-term task that requires the joint efforts and cooperation of society.

In the final stage of the activity, the team set up environmental science popularization booths at Lecong New World Shopping Mall and the campus of South China University of Technology. Using interactive games, they conducted science popularization to help local residents and students understand common environmental issues, waste classification knowledge, and raise awareness of environmental protection.

"Green Water, Blue Mountains, May You Accompany, With You in Environmental Protection, Walking Together". Environmental protection is a global challenge that requires the collective efforts from the society. The Green Wishes Service Team will not forget its original intentions, actively promote more people to join the environmental protection, and make everyone an actor in environmental protection, contributing to the protection of the Earth!
