For in-depth study and implementation of the essences of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and in accordance with the notice of the Working Committee of the Ministry of Education on carrying out the "Understanding China 2023" activity and the relevant notices of the University, the School of Environment and Energy fully leverages the advantages of the "Five Elders" who have experienced, witnessed, and practiced to explain to the young students the three significant events proposed by the 20th National Congress that have great practical and historical significance for the Party and the undertakings of the people. The activity aims to inspire and educate the young students to become dedicated youth of the new era with ideals, courages, perseverances, and willingnesses to strive in the new journey. On the morning of May 26, 2023, the school organized a theme educational discussion activity entitled “Understanding China - Dialogue Between the Old and the Young on the 20th National Congress, Embracing a New Journey” in B4-310 of the Environmental Building in the University Town Campus of the South China University of Technology. The activity invited retired Secretary Chen Hangyu as a guest speaker to have face-to-face communication and dialogues with young students of the school. Wu Honghui, Deputy Secretary of the School Party Committee, Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission, and Deputy Director of the Working Committee of the school, as well as colleagues from the school office, instructors, and young students, participated in this activity.

During the discussion, Mr. Chen Hangyu shared in detail his understandings and insights in the content of the report of the 20th National Congress of the CPC. When discussing his understanding of the relationship between the tasks of young students and national development, he encouraged the students to stay informed about current national affairs, integrate personal careers with the country's development, and incorporate their personal ideals into the construction of the CPC and the nation, striving to make contributions to the CPC, the motherland, and the people. Regarding the significant event of "completing the historic task of poverty alleviation and building a well-off society in an all-round way to realize the first centenary goal", he shared his understanding and insights on achieving common prosperity and adhering to the ideology of putting the people at the center. He led the students to review the great marvel of poverty alleviation, emphasized the important position of putting the people at the center and making the people the top priority. He called on the students to persistently study the report of the 20th National Congress, comprehend the Party's theory in practice, and integrate it with their personal thoughts and believes to continuously enhance their ideological consciousness.

Mr. Chen Hangyu combined the development of Chinese universities to share his understanding and insights on the implementation of the national strategy of rejuvenating the country through science and education. Based on his personal experiences, he elaborated on the profound connotation of the proposition that "education, science, and talent are the fundamental and strategic support for building a socialist modern country in an all-round way." He believed that since the reform and opening up, the CPC and the country have attached great importance to the education cause. Our university has adhered to the mission of educating students for the CPC and the country, implementing the fundamental task of cultivating virtue, and has made certain progress and development in recent years.

In the final part of the discussion, Mr. Chen Hangyu proposed the "Four Learnings" to the students: learning to care, learning to study, learning to survive, and learning to cooperate. With rich and specific examples, vivid metaphors, and clear explanations, he emphasized the importance of the "Four Learnings" for future learning, work, and life of college students. He encouraged the students to have sufficient confidence in the future, to proceed with firm determination, and to realize their dreams. His words deepened the students' understanding of the heartfelt message in the report of the 20th National Congress by General Secretary Xi Jinping, greatly inspiring them to inherit the red genes of the South China University of Technology, continue the legacy of the revolution, and strive to become pillars of the nation as soon as possible.
