On December 2, the School of Environment and Energy of South China University of Technology successfully held the Forum of Outstanding Young Scholars at Home and Abroad in the second half of 2021. Six overseas outstanding young scholars including Wang Jiawei were invited to attend the forum. The head of the school, experts of the academic committee and the Teaching Steering Committee, and some postdoctoral and graduate students attended the report meeting on site and online.

Outstanding Young Scholars at Home and Abroad Made Online Report

Young scholars focused on the construction and application of interaction in photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide system, biogeographic distribution pattern of microorganisms, community construction and system function, preparation of large-area organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells, electrochemical technology optimization to reuse the energy and resources hidden in sewage, pollution and carbon reduction and atmospheric governance by functionalized solid porous adsorbents, pyrolysis and recycling of organic solid waste: research and development of low-carbon long-term repair functional materials.

The sub-forum in the School of Environment and Energy of the Outstanding Young Scholars at Home and Abroad of South China University of Technology aimed to invite young talents with different academic backgrounds to discuss and exchange views around the international scientific frontiers, hot research fields and technical issues of industries. Via this platform, we can enlighten each other, broaden our horizons, enhance international exchanges and cooperation and promote the common development of both sides.

Attachment: brief introduction of the reporter

1. Reporter: Wang Jiawei

Dr. Wang Jiawei, postdoctoral researcher of Antoni Llobet research group of Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) in Spain and ICIQ Impulsion fellowship winner. Dr. Wang obtained his bachelor's and doctoral degrees from Sun Yat-Sen University in 2014 and 2019, and his doctoral supervisors are Professor Lu Tongbu and Professor Su Chengyong. From 2019 to 2021, Dr. Wang conducted postdoctoral research in the School of Chemistry of Sun Yat-Sen University, and the co-tutor is Professor Ouyang Gangfeng. Dr. Wang’s main research direction is the application of metal complexes as molecular catalysts in artificial photosynthesis. Dr. Wang has published 39 SCI papers and 18 papers as primary / corresponding author in mainstream journals at home and abroad, such as NAT Commun., Angew.  Chem.  Int. Ed., Chem.  Sci.,  ACS Catal., Coord.  Chem.  Rev. and other journals. Dr. Wang has presided over four provincial and ministerial funds.

2. Reporter: Kuang Jialiang

Dr. Kuang Jialiang received his doctoral degree in ecology from Sun Yat-Sen University in 2014, and is now engaged in the post-doctoral research at the Institute of Environmental Genetics, University of Oklahoma. Dr. Kuang focuses on a series of basic theoretical issues of community ecology. Based on molecular biology technologies such as high-throughput sequencing, functional gene chip and isotope tracing, Dr. Kuang studies on the impact of the ecological regulation factors (such as environmental stress, global climate change, land use change, etc.) on the temporal and spatial pattern, dynamics and species interaction of microbial community. By discussing the response of microbial community, Dr. Kuang further reveals how the ecological factors mediate the process of community construction and affect the function of microbial-driven system. So far, Dr. Kuang has published 26 SCI papers, including 8 papers as the primary / corresponding author, 3 papers on the top journals of ecology such as Global Change Biology and ISME Journal.

3. Reporter: Ye Fei

Dr. Ye Fei obtained his doctoral degree from the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2017 and is now engaged in post-doctoral research in the School of Optics of Rochester University. Dr. Ye has been engaged in the research of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite for a long time. Dr. Ye’s research direction is the preparation and technology of materials closely related to energy and environment, such as solar cells, X-ray and gamma ray detection, and has made a series of academic innovation achievements. So far, Dr. Ye has published 16 SCI papers, including 6 papers as the primary author. Dr. Ye also published in the journals of EES, Nature, AM, AFM and other journals.

5. Reporter: Shang Shanshan

Dr. Shang Shanshan graduated from Central South University with a bachelor's degree and was recommended to study chemical engineering in Tianjin University with a master's degree. Dr. Shang graduated from the School of Energy and Environment of City University of Hong Kong and is now engaged in post-doctoral research in the Department of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering of the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Shang has long been engaged in scientific research on solid porous adsorbents (especially metal organic framework MOF), and is committed to development of novel functionalized adsorbents/catalysts related to the capture, separation and conversion of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide) and atmospheric pollutants (nitrogen oxides), and the use of in-situ infrared, in-situ synchrotron radiation and other technologies to reveal the gas adsorption mechanism. So far, Dr. Shang has published 17 SCI papers, including 7 papers as the primary author published on Angew Chem. Int. Edit., ACS Nano, ACS Catalysis, Chemical Engineering Journal, Journal of Hazardous Materials and ACS ES&T Engineering, and 1 paper is being submitted. Dr. Shang has won many honors such as the outstanding scientific research achievement award of the City University of Hong Kong.

6. Reporter: Sun Yuqing

Dr. Sun Yuqing received the doctoral degree in environmental engineering from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2019. Now Dr. Sun is engaged in post-doctoral research in the Department of Municipal and Environmental Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr. Sun has been engaged in the theoretical research and engineering practice of biochar water treatment technology for a long time, and has made a series of outstanding innovative achievements in the research and development of low-carbon long-term restoration functional materials, physicochemical treatment of high-strength industrial wastewater, rainwater collection and reuse in developed urban areas, remediation of contaminated sites, etc. So far, Dr. Sun has published 51 papers in SCI journals (12 highly cited papers of ESI), including 14 papers as the primary author (1 highly cited paper of ESI), which have been published in Chemical Engineering Journal, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Environment International and other JCR Q1 journals.
