Cucurbiturils are macrocyclic host molecules or so-called molecular container compounds. This means that these molecules have an inner cavity which is sufficiently large to encapsulate in their interior smaller guest molecules. They have taken over a leading position in the development of supramolecular chemistry, because they provide a playground for the detailed investigation of intermolecular interactions. Their inner cavity has even been considered by Cram as a “new phase of matter”. Of particular interest are water-soluble macrocycles such as cucurbiturils because the resulting host-guest complexes are very tight due to the hydrophobic effect, and because the reactions inside their cavities are biomimetic in a stricter sense. We will provide an overview of our research in the area of molecular container compounds, with a focus on cucurbiturils as one of the most fascinating representatives.

Werner Nau教授是德国康斯特大学(原不来梅雅各布大学)常务副校长,英国皇家化学学会(RSC)会士,同时也是德国化学学会(GDCh)和美国化学学会(ACS)等多个学术组织的成员。他获得了包括欧洲光化学协会Grammaticakis–Neumann奖(2000年)、瑞士化学学会的Werner奖(2002年)和EPA-PPS奖(2010年)在内的多项国际奖项,发表了300多篇学术论文,其中包括发表在《Science》《Nature Chemistry》《JACS》和《Angew》等顶级期刊,总引用次数超过20000次。他的课题组研究兴趣专注于物理有机化学与超分子化学的交叉领域,以及超分子组装体在传感、催化、制药工业和生物系统中的应用研究。
