On the morning of May 26, 2024, the 17th National College Student Software Innovation Competition, sponsored by the Alliance of Model Software Colleges and undertaken by the School of Software of Northwestern Polytechnical University and other units, successfully concluded in the Zhihui Valley, Taicang, Jiangsu. With the theme of "Software Defines the World, Innovation Leads the Future", this competition attracted a total of 341 universities from 32 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country, with 1,530 teams and 4,562 participants registering for the competition. The 30 teams that entered the national finals competed fiercely in the Taicang Zhihui Port, showing the infinite possibilities of software defining the world.
With the strong support of the School of Software Engineering and the careful guidance of teachers, two student teams of our school centered on the competition topic "Mobile Terminal Application Innovation Based on Frontier Technologies such as AIGC", combined with real-life scenarios and practical needs for creative design. After more than 7 months of fierce competition, they finally won the first prize and the second prize in the national finals respectively. Teacher Cai Yi won the Excellent Instructor Award, and South China University of Technology won the Best Organization Award in the South China Region.
The team that won the first prize in the national finals is the "Assassin Squad" team composed of four members, Chen Junpeng, Chen Jiali, Wu Zihan, and Hei Xusen. Under the guidance of Teacher Cai Yi, they brought a work named "Children's Bilingual Picture Book Creation and Reading Companion Assistant (Picture Book Xiaoxin)". Picture Book Xiaoxin is a mini-program for picture book creation and reading companion for children and parents. Only by providing a general idea, users can customize beautiful picture book stories and in-depth thinking questions, and support users to modify the details of pictures and texts to get a story content that better meets their expectations. At the same time, the product provides an intelligent assistant to accompany children to complete reading, with functions including bilingual reading aloud, oral English evaluation, intelligent Q&A, and after-class thinking exercises, making children's reading based on picture books but not limited to picture books, and making children's reading no longer lonely.
The team that won the second prize in the national finals is the "Striving for Excellence in the Mirror" team composed of four members, Chen Ruolin, Li Jinjin, Zhan Mohan, and Xue Yuqi. Under the guidance of Teacher Cai Yi, they brought a work named "Intelligent Glasses WiseSight: Elderly Life Assistant Based on AIGC". WiseSight is a pair of intelligent glasses specially designed for the elderly group. It skillfully integrates technologies such as AIGC, LLM (Large Model), and multimodality, adopts a C/S architecture, and provides the target users with functions such as intelligent interaction, assisted reading, item search, and emergency assistance, meeting the different needs of the target users in daily life and providing users with more convenient life services and safety guarantees.
Software defines the world, and innovation leads the future. This competition is not only a technical competition but also an innovation feast. It witnessed the talent and passion of our students and reflected the innovative thinking and solid technical skills of our participating teams. In the future, the School of Software Engineering of South China University of Technology will continue to encourage students to promote learning and practice through competitions, continuously expand students' innovative practical ability, and make due contributions to the development of new quality productivity and enhancing the core competitiveness of the national software industry!
