MA in Journalism & Communication

The School of Journalism and Communication offers four MA programs: Journalism, Communication, Brand Communication, and Intercultural Communication.

These 3-year academic research programs are based on the advantages of multi-disciplinary intersection at SCUT, supported by the studies of new media and big data, and boosted by the regional advantages from the state-strategy of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The main academic features and fields of the Programs include data journalism, documentary studies, health communication, brand communication and computational advertising, international cultural communication, etc.

1. Journalism

Based on the historical theory of Journalism and communication, it highlights the research fields of local journalism and communication history, data journalism, media innovation and media culture, emphasizes the interdisciplinary research methods and theoretical application of journalism and communication, politics, history and sociology, and reflects the regionality, frontier, theory and application of journalism Research. It forms obvious characteristics in the production and dissemination of data news; the transformation of traditional journalism; the historical development laws and trend of journalism and communication industry in early modern Guangdong; basic characteristicscontent and evolution of Chinese newspaper reading; the development trend of media culture, social influence and critical reflection.

2. Communication

It takes new media communication as the principal part, promotes the intersection and integration between arts, science and engineering disciplines, and forms distinctive characteristics in the research fields of intelligent media, data analysis, information visualization, social media communication psychological mechanism analysis, health communication and so on. It strengthens horizontal exchanges and cooperation with computer science and technology and other disciplines; emphasizes the research on the integrated development of media experiment, data science and communication industry; highlights the research on the integration and development of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao media; serves the national strategic needs of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Bay area; promotes the research on the integration of film and television communication and new media.

3. Brand Communication

This program is set up based on first Chinese domestic Brand Communication Major. Supported by Key Laboratory of New Media and Brand Communication Innovation and Application of Guangdong Province, and Guangdong Big Data and Computational Advertising Engineering Technology Research Center, the program offers courses on Advertising Theories and focuses on the interdisciplinary cooperation with software engineering, computer science and business administration. Specifically, fields such as big data and brand communication innovation, computational advertising, intelligent marketing, organizational communication and management will be involved. The program hopes to play its role and influence of brand communication and enterprise marketing in the state-strategy of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and to promote the integration of production, education, and research in brand communication.

4. Intercultural Communication

Supported byThe Centre of Public Diplomacy and Intercultural Communication Research, this program focuses on the studies of cross-cultural adaptation, of international communication of Chinese language, and of Chinese traditional culture communication. It has formed distinctive features in two fields: the studies on Confucius Institute, and the studies on cross-cultural adaptation of international students in China. To be concrete, the former field includes issues of cross-cultural communication and management, organizational leadership, cross-cultural conflict, sustainable development in Confucius Institute. The latter involves issues of international students' (including foreign students of Chinese origin) cross-cultural adaptation and communication, their intercultural communication, their understanding of Chinese state-situation, etc.
