Academic Overview

 

In 2021, the School of Journalism and Communication(SJC) ranked top 10% of the best disciplines in China by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. In 2006, the school began to recruit graduate students in communications. In 2011, the school was authorized to offer MPh degree, and in 2014 the school was authorized to offer MA degree. From 2013, it partnered with SCUT’s School of Marxism to offer an interdisciplinary doctoral degree in Marxist Journalism and Communication Research, and the Ph.D. degree application in Journalism and Communication was submitted in 2021.

 

With the cross-integration of Arts, Science, and engineering, SJC highlights its strength in communication theory, data journalism, advertising, health communication, digital culture, etc. SJC is also specialized in the research on communication history, new media, computational communication, audio-visual communication, brand communication, and trans-cultural diffusion.

 

At present, one centre and five platforms have been established, referring to the journalism and Communication sub-centre of the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for liberal arts; the national and regional research and training base of the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of new media and Brand Communication Innovation and application of Guangdong Province, the Guangdong Big Data and Computational Advertising Engineering Technology Center, the Guangdong Public Diplomacy and Trans-cultural diffusion, and the Guangdong Public Health Risk Monitoring and information communication centre, and a number of school-level platforms such as the Centre for Data Analysis and Visualization, the Centre for Documentary Creation and Research, and the Hakka People Institute of Cultural Studies. Two national secondary institutes have been established as the local journalism history research society of the China Journalism History Society, the Documentary Committee of the film and Television Society of China’s Universities, and the Network Audio-visual Creation and Research Center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area. SJC achieved the integration of production, education and research, and is influential in academia and industries.


In terms of scientific research projects and paper output, in recent five years, our school has undertaken 14 National Social Science Fund projects (including 2 major projects and 2 key projects) and 78 provincial and ministerial-level projects, the total project funding reached 19,781,600 RMB. Won 2 awards of the Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences, 6 awards of the Provincial Social Sciences Achievement. Over 200 papers have been published, including more than 200 CSSCI, 19 SSCI, 5 SCI, among which 4 of Q1 papers. Besides, 57 textbooks and monographs are published in the past 5 years.
