Nature—the creatorof all life—crafts materials with extraordinary properties through intricatehierarchical structures. For generations, Nature has been the source ofinspiration for scientists and engineers to innovate and transform our world.By learning from nature, our group design and engineer advanced materials withbioinspired hierarchical structures that span molecular, nano, micro, and macroscales. In our special 4M approach, we use multi-scale material processingtechnologies to create a wide range of materials, from hard ceramics to softhydrogels and aerogels.In this presentation,I will highlight our work on PVA-based organo-hydrogels, fabricated through afreeze-casting-assisted solution substitution process. These hydrogels, withtendon-like hierarchical structures, exhibit outstanding stretchability,strength, and fracture toughness, showing potential for flexible electronicsand sensors. Additionally, I will showcase our direct-ink-write 3D printingtechnique, which aligns ceramic platelets within a polymer matrix, resulting incomposite organo-hydrogels with tunable mechanical performance while retainingexcellent electrical conductivity. We have also extended this approach toaerogels, combining electrospinning with freeze casting to producemultifunctional aerogels with enhanced mechanical and functional properties. Bymerging nature-inspired design with advanced manufacturing, we aim to innovateadvanced materials for diverse applications.

翟玮,现任新加坡国立大学,机械工程系,助理教授,从事多功能材料的制造和应用研究。2011年本科毕业于北京科技大学材料系,2015年博士毕业于剑桥大学工程系,2015至2019年在新加坡制造技术研究院担任研究员。现任《Materials & Design》和《Materials todaycommunications》杂志编辑。其工作发表于 Nature Communications, Science Advances, Advanced Materials, Materials Today, AdvancedFunctional Materials, Acta Materialia, JMPS等期刊。
