Materials Science and Engineering

Program Code:  080500    Duration:3 years

Objectives

This program aims to cultivate high-level scientific and technological talents in materials science and engineering who master the physical and chemical theories of material preparation, processing,performance control, testing, and analysis; possess an in-depth understandingof the relationships between material composition, structure, and properties;and demonstrate the ability to independently engage in engineering technologyand scientific research. After graduation, the candidates will have the ability to continue scientific research, or work in materials companies, research institutes, universities, governmentagencies or others.

Study Duration

The maximum study duration will not exceed 5 years.

Training Methods 

The training of academic master’s students mainly adopts an integrated approach combining coursework, scientific research,academic exchanges, and social practice, with a supervisor (or supervisor group) responsibility system implemented. Under the guidance of their supervisors, master’s students shall formulate a personal training plan within two weeks of enrollment. They are required to complete the dissertation proposal before the 3rd semester, finish the mid-term dissertation assessment before the 5th semester, and complete such procedures as the pre-defense, dissertation review, and formal defense in the 6th semester.

Minimum Required Course Credits: 22

Minimum Elective Course Credits: 4

Academic Achievement Requirements for Degree Application

In addition to the course requirement,students are also required to conduct a specific research project, and publish at least one peer-reviewed paper or file one patent application related to his/her research as the first author or second author (in this case her/his supervisor as the first author) in scientific journals. Their thesis must be independently carried out under the direction of his/her supervisor, and must meet the academic standards of South China University and Technology.
