Educational Objectives:

Focusing on the frontiers of the development of polymer materials and engineering, facing the major needs of the country and economic construction,we are committed to develop polymer materials and engineering professional first-class talents of innovation, invention, and entrepreneurship with both patriotic sentiment and an international vision, and be able to make achievements in socialist modernization. We attach importance to our students'all-around development in morality, intelligence, physique, aesthetics and labor skills, and embrace lifelong learning so that they can develop flexibility to adapt to changes. Students are cultivated to have excellent learning, thinking and action abilities, and have safety and environmental awareness, have goodlearning spirit, research conduct, ideological quality, literacy skills in humanities and social sciences, work ethic, teamwork spirit as well as have good mental and physical health, and systematically mastering the basic principles, professional skills, research methods and other knowledge of polymer materials science and engineering, having the abilities to work in material, chemical industry, machinery and other fields engaged in polymer-related scientific research, technical development, engineering design,production, management and other areas of high-quality work.

After the training during undergraduate period, as well as the further study and exercise in the work place, the graduates should have the following abilities after about 5 years: 

(1) Being able to successfully carry out thework related to the profession in the fields of industry and academia, adapting to the independent and team work environment;

(2) being able to analyze and solve complex polymer engineering problems using the knowledge of large material disciplines and polymer materials disciplines;

(3) being able to evaluate the cost, process,environmental protection, performance and benefit and selective polymer materials from the point of view of application objectives, having the abilityto analyze and manage the relevant ethics and technologies involved;

(4) having good professional ethics and the excellent quality of “three practices and a innovate” (solid foundation, solid work, simple style, courage to innovate), being able to adapt to career development through lifelong learning, in the field of polymer materials science and engineering has a continuous improvement in the competitiveness of the workplace and global vision.

Program Profile:

Polymer materials and engineering has a long history and ranks in the domestic first-class level. The predecessor of this major consists of the country’s first major of rubbers set up by South China Institute of Technologyin 1952, and the first batch of polymer chemical engineering and chemical fibers set up in 1958, which were merged into Polymer Materials and Engineeringin 1997. At present, it not only covers the teaching and research of major polymer materials: plastic, fiber, rubber, traditional adhesives, coatings and nonwovens technology, but also the development of new disciplines and interdisciplinary direction, such as polymer optoelectronic materials and devices, polymer functional materials, biomedical materials and environmentally friendly materials and so on. This major takes polymer synthesis, structure and performance, molding processing as the core curriculum, adheres to optimize and improve the practice of teaching with a high rate of engineering practice, and focuses on cultivating students’ ability of ‘Three Creative’ (innovation,creation and entrepreneurship) and ‘Three Abilities’ (abilities in learning,thinking and acting). The professional teachers’ strength is strong, reasonable structure. There are 74 full-time teachers, 95% of the teachers have doctoral degree. The experimental teaching center is 1736 m2, and the per-student usable area is approximately 3.62 m2. We have more than50 internship practice bases outside SCUT, including plastics, rubber, fiber,coatings, adhesives, photoelectric functional materials etc. in traditional polymer and new materials. Adhering to the advantages of the personnel trainingof traditional polymer materials, we promote the high-tech materials merge with each other, and broaden field of the major, in order to expand the employment areas of graduates and to lay a solid foundation on their pursuing in higher education.

(1) This major with a long history and ranking in the domestic first-class level, which is the Characteristic Major of Institution of Higher Learning of the Ministry of Education, Famous Major in Guangdong Province, and is qualified with the Chinese Engineering Education Certification.

(2) Solid Foundation, Strong Capability and High Potential: By consolidating the foundation of chemistry, broadening the international perspective, and enhancing the abilityto solve complex engineering problems, this major aims to cultivate first-class undergraduate talents in the field of Polymer Materials and Engineering.

(3) This major is in the domestic leading position in the aspects of rubber processing & modification, polymer solution & gel, construction engineering polymers, marine engineering polymers,optoelectronic polymer materials & devices, and so on.
