Educational Objectives:

Focusing on frontiers of materials science and facing the major needs of the country and economic development, we are committed to develop materials leading talents of innovation, invention, and entrepreneurship with both patriotic sentiment and an international vision. We attach importance to our students' all-around development in morality,intelligence, physique, aesthetics and labour skills, and embrace lifelong learning so that they can develop flexibility to adapt to changes. Students are cultivated to have excellent learning, thinking and action abilities, and have safety and environmental awareness, have good learning spirit, research conduct, ideological quality, literacy skills in humanities and social sciences, work ethic, teamwork spirit as well as have good mental and physical health, and be able to make achievements in socialist modernization. The graduates of more than five years are required:

(1) Have national feelings, fighting spirit, good psychological quality and a healthy body, abide by academic ethics and professional ethics, and practice the social responsibility of engineers forpublic safety, health and well-being and environmental protection;

(2) Have ability to use engineering knowledge and modern tools to carry out major-related work in industrial, educational and new business fields, and to adapt to independent and team work environment;

(3) Have ability to apply professional knowledge and skills to identify, understand, and solve complex problems in materials science and engineering practice;

(4) Have patriotism, global vision, fighting spirit, good communication and project management skills, and aspiring to contribute to thesocial, economic and technological development in materials science and engineering and related fields. And they are able to adapt to career development through lifelong learning.


ProgramProfile:

The major of Materials Science and Engineering in South China University of Technology is the characteristic specialty of the Ministry of Education and the key specialty of Guangdong Province. It has a post-doctoralmobile station for the first-level disciplines and a complete Bachelor-Master-Doctor integrated training system. Its predecessor was Silicate Engineering major and the Heat Treatment teaching and research group established in 1952. In 2004, two specialties of metallic materials and inorganic non-metallic materials were merged to establish a wide-caliber MSE specialty. In 2007, it became a national key discipline of the first-class discipline. In 2017 and 2022, it was consecutively selected as the double first-class discipline of the Ministry of Education. In 2017 and 2023, it consecutively passed the certification of Engineering Education in China. In 2019, it was selected as a national first-class undergraduate major construction site.

The professional teachers in this major have strong ability and reasonable structure. There are 73 full-time teachers, including academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, specially appointed professors of the Yangtze River Scholars, chief scientist of the 973 Project, recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, recipients of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, and specially appointed professors of the PearlRiver Scholars. Furthermore, 95% of the teachers hold doctoral degrees.

The specialty orientation is to train high-quality comprehensive innovative, entrepreneurial,creative talents with thick foundation, wide adaptability and excellent abilities in learning, thinking and acting for material science and engineering. The major makes full use of the advantages of scientific research,realizes the complementarities of teaching and scientific research, makes the professional knowledge teaching more timely, targeted and creative, and has formed a series of curriculum systems with distinct characteristics and outstanding professionalism, while creating a scientific,positive and active teaching and learning environment. All above measures are aimed at cultivating students' practical ability and innovation ability.

This specialty has one State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices, seven provincial / ministerial key laboratories / engineering research centers and one national experimental teaching demonstration center.

 

Program Features:

This major encompasses two directions: inorganic non-metallic materials and metallic materials. The curriculum system covers the basic theories and application knowledge of structural materials and functional materials, cultivating students' abilities in multi-system composite material design, preparation and research, as well as the integration and innovation capabilities across different material systems.It aims to meet the future talent demand in the field of structure-function integrated intelligent material manufacturing.

The major focuses on the deep integration of basic theories and engineering practice, supported by the fundamental theories of materials science. It emphasizes the combination of industry, academia, research, and education, innovates practical teaching, and solidifies students' engineering capabilities.

Following the principle of emphasizing fundamentals and broadening horizons, the major notonly cultivates students' qualities necessary for academic further studies but also reserves technical abilities to serve the advanced materials industry,providing students with diverse development paths.
