School of Materials Science andEngineering (SMSE) at South China University of Technology (SCUT) evolved from theMaterials Science discipline of South China Institute of Technology (the predecessor of SCUT),with its history tracing back to the 1950s.

Since its establishment, the school has been dedicated to cultivating top-tier talents in scientific research and engineering with a strong sense of social responsibility, as well as interdisciplinary innovative professionals with a global perspective.

Position: ExcellentYoung Scientists Fund Program (Overseas)

Program Overview

The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Overseas), known asthe “Overseas Excellent Young Scientist” program, has been established since2021. It aims to attract and encourage outstanding young scholars from overseas(including non-Chinese nationals) who have made significant achievements in natural sciences, engineering, and technology to return to China (or come toChina) for work. The program allows scholars to independently choose their research directions and conduct innovative studies, promoting the rapid growth of young scientific and technological talents, cultivating a group of exceptional academic leaders who are expected to enter the forefront of global science and technology.

Qualifications and Expectations:

(1) Comply with the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic ofChina, possess good scientific ethics, and conscientiously embody the spirit ofscientists in the new era.

(2) Born on or after January 1st, 1986.

(3) Hold a doctoral degree.

(4) The main research focus shall cover natural sciences, engineering, and related fields.

(5) Since obtaining a doctoral degree until the application deadline in 2026, applicants are generally required to hold a formal teaching or research position at an overseas university, research institution, or corporate R&D organization for at least 36 consecutive months. Exceptions may be made for those who obtained their doctoral degree overseas and demonstrate particularly outstanding achievements, allowing for a relaxation of the work experience requirement.

(6) Have acquired research or technical achievements recognized by peers,and possess the potential to become an academic leader or outstanding talent in the field.

(7) Applicants who have not yet returned to work in China full-time or who returned to work in China on or after January 1, 2025, must resign from their overseas positions or have no employment overseas upon receiving the funding notification. After receiving the funding notification, the recipient must resign from overseas work and return to China to work full-time for at least 3 years.
