On November 27-29 2020, the fourth “Cement and Concrete” Young Scientist Salon was held in Conghua District, Guangzhou, jointly organized by School of Materials Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology (SMSE, SCUT), College of Civil and Transportation Engineering, Shenzhen University and Special Committee for Building Materials of Civil Engineering and Architectural Society of Guangdong. Focusing on frontier development in the field of cement and concrete science, the event aims to bring together a number of researchers to discuss relevant strategies, exchange experience and ideas, giving full play to young scientists in solving major scientific problems and addressing national strategic needs. More than 30 scholars and experts from prestigious domestic universities and research institutions attended in this activity.

The Salon was hosted by Professor Jiangxiong Wei from SCUT and Professor Biqin Dong from Shenzhen University, and mainly included two sessions: academic presentations and free discussions. Professor Jiayuan Ye from China Building Materials Academy, Professor Dongshuai Hou from Qingdao University of Technology, Dr. Shuxian Hong from Shenzhen University, Dr. Peng Gao from SCUT, and Associate Professor Dujian You were invited to give keynote speech in the first session, respectively presenting their latest research on structure and hydration of Alite, application of molecular dynamics in the study of concrete materials, characterization and qualitative analysis of fracture behavior of concrete materials based on XCT and DVC technologies, interaction mechanism between unequal stress/strain and cracking in concrete, and degradation model and durability failure of the sulfate erosion to concrete. For the second session, researchers were divided into several seminar groups, discussing the future development and trend of cement and concrete from the perspectives of engineering and durability, structure and property modulation, hydration and hardening, cement and cementing material, production and manufacture, and others. Through this salon, young researchers got inspired by exchanging thoughts and listening to others’ research.

Prior to this salon, three previous salons have been successfully held in Tsinghua University, Wuhan University of Technology and Tongji University, and the 5th Young Scientist Salon on Cement and Concrete will be held in Lanzhou in 2021. This indeed provides a significant platform for the young scientists to communicate freely and equally with each other.
