Good news has recently arrived from the 5th International Collegiate Engineering Mechanics Competition (Asia Region): students from South China University of Technology (SCUT) have once again achieved excellent results. All nine SCUT participants won awards, with Li Zhenjun receiving the first prize in the individual competition, and Cai Yuqi, Zhong Nuoxi, and Gao Luhua winning first prize in the team competition. Additionally, the SCUT team was awarded the second prize in the group category.
Participating Students and Instructors
The competition was held from November 29 to December 1, 2024, at Hohai University (Jiangning Campus), with a total of 596 students from 69 universities across the country participating. The competition consisted of individual and team events, with both the exam papers and answers required to be in English. The questions were prepared by the Belarusian National Technical University, commissioned by the International Collegiate Engineering Mechanics Competition Organizing Committee, and were brought to China by a designated representative. The grading was conducted under the strict supervision of Belarusian experts.
The School of Civil Engineering and Transportation at SCUT has always placed great emphasis on teaching fundamental mechanics, focusing on strengthening students' foundational knowledge in the subject. The school has participated in this competition for four consecutive years, fostering a positive atmosphere of promoting teaching and learning through competition through involvement in such high-level academic contests. With strong support from the Academic Affairs Office and the school, the Department of Engineering Mechanics assigned instructors Yang Yi and Huang Huaiwei to lead a team of nine students—five from the 2022 cohort and four from the 2023 cohort of the Engineering Mechanics Innovation Class—to Nanjing for the competition. The participating students remarked that the competition not only tested their understanding of mechanical principles but also honed their problem-analysis and problem-solving skills, broadening their professional horizons. Competing alongside outstanding students from various universities also allowed them to recognize their strengths and weaknesses, motivating them to strive for excellence in their future studies.
