Welcome to the Department of Road Engineering at the South China University of Technology. As one of the top-ranked departments for road engineering nationally, we are proud to offer educational and research programs in civil engineering, transportation engineering, and road and railway engineering. We have 21 faculty members, including 9 professors, 10 associate professors, 1 senor lecturer, and 1 senior engineer. More than 90 percent of our faculty own doctoral titles and oversea teaching/research experience for at least one year. Our distinguished faculty are leading innovative research that impacts road construction materials, subgrade and pavement engineering, subgrade and slope engineering, computer-aided highway engineering and design, highway design theory and method, highway rehabilitation technology and asset management, modern monitoring technologies for highway and bridge, and urban rail transportation and tunnel engineering. We have cultivated more than 100 PhD students, 500 master students, and 1000 bachelor students, who are contributing to developments of local transportation industry at Guangdong Province, as well as the national and international projects. we continuously strive to implement new and innovative methods to educate and inspire our students to become future leaders on professional, community, state, nation, and world levels.
The department has two provincial level research centers, including the Subtropical Road Engineering Technology Research Center of Guangdong Province and Modern Road Engineering Technology Research Center of Guangdong Universities. There are more than 70 research equipment that worth up to 40 million RMB in total at our department. It is recognized as one of the best research institutes which own the most advanced research facilities in road engineering at national level. Our researchers have led more than 30 national scientific research projects, including the National Science and Technology Support Program, National Program on Key Basic Research Projects (973 Program), and Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China. Our research outcomes have been employed to create more than three national specifications, such as the “Specifications for Design of Highway Asphalt Pavement”, “Technical Specifications for Construction of Highway Asphalt Pavements”, and “Technical Specifications for Highway Asphalt Pavement Recycling”. We have received one Second Class Prize of The State Scientific and Technological Progress award, two Special Prize for The Guangdong Scientific and Technological Progress awards, and more than 20 other provincial and ministerial level awards for the scientific technological progress. Based on the research conducted in our department, construction and rehabilitation projects of the pavements for more than 10000 km highway and 20 grad bridges (i.e. Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge and Nansha bridge) have been successfully accomplished. In addition, we have been certificated with more than 50 national invention patents and 50 utility model patents. Those successes contribute significantly to the progress of technical development in the road engineering.
The Department of Road Engineering offers Master of Engineering and PhD programs for students in road and railway engineering. The Master program emphasizes professional knowledge and skills, including research techniques. The PhD program is a research degree focusing on extensive and original approaches to scientific problem-solving. The discipline of road and railway engineering was authorized to start Master program in 2001, and PhD program in 2010. Currently, we have 8 PhD supervisors and 19 master-student supervisors who offer around 10 opening positions for PhD students and 30 positions for master students each year.
