Academic Report by Director Jiang Min from ARUP
time: 2016-05-23

On May 12th 2016, Director Jiang from ARUP (Shanghai) visited South China University of Technology and gave a report about engineering design and experience sharing to our students. The students, including year 4 bachelor and graduate students, has gained a lot from his report.

The report mainly included idea on structural design and interpretation on some practical examples of engineering. Director Jiang talked about integrated design, which was the state-of-the-art technology for comprehensively considering efficiency, safety, utility, architectural function, appurtenance and other issues.
Director Jiang mentioned about the current status for many young designers, who relied too much on design code and design software without understanding the principal behind the design code. Young designers tended to directly apply the old design idea to those new design projects without careful consideration. This tendency might lead to unreliable result. Director Jiang then introduced some practical design examples, such as structural joint, column grid transformation between upper and lower structures. All these enlightening examples inspired our students.
Director Jiang Min is the board members of ARUP (Asia) company. He joined ARUP in 1986 as a structural engineer. In his early career he used to work in Hong Kong, London and Shanghai. He was interested in integrated design method, and believed that it was essential for sustainable design. He finished many large projects including the Langhom Hong Kong, Design Institute of Hong Kong and Guangzhou tower. In the past few years, he and his groups gave many academic report to our students.
