Issuing the appointment letter of adjunct professor 

On December 26, alumni Li Guoxiong, chairman of Guangzhou Luban Construction Group(GLCG), was engaged as SCUT adjunct professor. SCET Dean Su Cheng issued Li the appointment letter of SCUT adjunct professor and the donation certificate of SCUT Education Fund. GLCG representatives and over 100 SCET teachers and students witnessed the signing ceremony of SCET-GLCG Co-building Practice Base and the issuing of the plaque of Teaching Practice Base. Adjunct professor Li Guoxiong issued the certificates of Luban Scholarship to the students. SCET dean SU Cheng, party secretary Luo Yi, executive vice dean Li Meichun, deputy party secretary Zhang Weijie, deputy director of the Department of Civil Engineering Li Jing attended the ceremony and listened to Mr Li's academic report. The meeting was chaired by the SCET party secretary Luo Yi.
When talking about deep relation between GLCG and SCUT, alumni Li Guoxiong couldn't control his excitement, pride and gratitude. SCUT was the cradle of his company, from the brand position of GLCG that he made in the early 1990s when he started the company, to the success of GLCG as a national leader in specialty construction industry. The company's main technical staffs were SCUT alumni, for example, GLCG's technical advisor Feng Jianping was a professor of SCUT and also construction expert. It could say that they were "SCUTers in GLCG, and GLCGers in SCUT."
In his report entitled Translation, Rectification and Load Transfer of Buildings, Mr Li Guoxiong shared his over-30-year experience in engineering practice in building technology industry. Through some cases, such as the jacking-up and rectification project of an eight-floor building at Dezheng Road, Guangzhou City, the basic trimmer project of Line 1 of Guangzhou Metro, which was the most difficult case and with greatest risk in China, he used easy and clear words to explained the rectification of tilted buildings, the principles of building's translation and the technology of removing columns by supporting beams of the pile foundations of buildings of metro.
Mr Li encouraged young students to be initiative, accountable and hard-working engineers who were brave to challenge problems. "We, us design engineers, must consider as much as we can. The biggest drawback of China's industry is the lack of technology management rather than that of technology itself. Machines may fail to work, and the biggest shortcoming of China's industrial products is that the functions of these products are unstable, so we must make the structure design meet the most unfavorable condition." Li said, "Faced with problems without precedent, engineers generally have two attitudes -- one is to quit and the other one is to meet the challenge and conquer it. And that is the difference between outstanding engineers and not excellent ones." "If you want to be successful in construction industry, you'd better go to the department of structure design or construction where you can accumulate more experience rather than to those non-technical departments where the work is easier."
It is reported that Guangzhou Luban Construction Group provided scholarship for SCUT students in 1993. And now, 20 years later, it was his care for Alma mater and his gratitude to it that made Li Guoxiong set GLCG Scholarship in SCUT.
