Research interests and main achievements
Interest I: Fungal natural product biosynthesis and regulation
We focus on fungal natural secondary metabolites with potential valuable usage in medicine, and investigate essential scientific issues related with the biosynthesis, heterologous expression and molecular regulation mechanisms about such secondary metabolites. Combined with genetic manipulation and genome-scale functional analysis, we aim to activate abundant silent secondary metabolic gene clusters to induce novel metabolites, which could contribute to exploring active natural products and providing lead compounds for drug exploration. Ongoing and accomplished research projects in this field include: (1) Association analysis of aflatoxin biosynthesis and sclerotial development in Aspergillus flavus based on transcriptome sequencing (supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, NSFC); (2) Epigenetic modification mechanism on regulating filamentous fungal secondary metabolite biosynthesis and its application (supported by Science and Technology Program of Guangzhou, China); (3) Mechanism study of secondary metabolite biosynthesis in filamentous Aspergillus niger regulated by epigenetic modification (supported by Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities, China).
Interest II: Industrial biotechnology; Aspergillus genetics and physiology
We focus on filamentous fungal strains widely used in industrial fields such as food, fermentation and textile, including Aspergillus oryzae, A. niger, A. flavus and so on. We investigate the essential scientific issues related with fungal protein expression and its regulation mechanisms. The aim is to construct effective filamentous fungal protein expression systems, in order to solve the practical problems in the industrial production related with food, fermentation and textile, according to national developmental requirements. Ongoing and accomplished research projects in this field include: (1) Effective large-scale production and application of Porcine circovirus capsid protein vaccine in Aspergillus niger (supported by Science and Technology Planning Project of Guangdong Province); (2) Screening and improvement of novel enzymes applied in food processing (supported by Hi-tech Research and Development program of China, 863 program); (3) Biological preparation of food base grease without trans fatty acids and its application (supported by Science and Technology Planning Project of Guangdong Province).
