Research Interests

Studies focus on environmental microbiology and microbial ecology, recent researches main on discovering the effect and application of microorganisms on the environmental pollutant management, renewable energy and functional material developments.

Uncultivated microorganisms: It is a part of the environmental microbiology & ecology, the aim of this subject is uncovering the microbial community, function and interaction with other organisms in natural or manmade ecosystems by using genetic fingerprinting, high throughput sequencing, or metagenomic/metatranscriptomic technologies; after the study by the culture-independent molecular technology, we aim to culture the uncultivated microorganism by directionally enriching and isolating strategies, such as the ammonia-oxidizing archaea, anammox bacteria, etc.

Microalgae: promoting the algal growth and products (starch, lipid, photosynthetic pigment, etc) accumulation by improving the photosynthesis; application of industrial, agricultural and domestic sewage to culture microalgae for supplying high-lipid content algal biomass to develop biodiesel; utilization of microalgal-bacterial interaction to enhance algal lipid production and biohydrogen generation.
