Introduction:

National engineering research center of novel equipment for polymer processing (South China University of Technology) was formally established on February, 1998 upon approval from the former state planning commission. The founder and current academic leader is Prof. Jinping Qu, a Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The engineering center covers an applied basic research area of 15 mu, and have various international advanced and self-developed equipment. The center focuses on the basic research and lab-scale experiment, and aims to develop professional high-tech talents in the field of plastic. The engineering center is located in the R & D center in Guangzhou Science City, and the gross area is 24,000 square meters. A lot of advanced polymer manufacturing companies have been entered into the center, and they have the responsibilities to the development of advanced technology and industrialized promotion.

The Engineering Center is supported by the 2 key national disciplines (materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering) and 5 Ph.D. programs (materials science, materials processing engineering, materials chemistry and physics, mechanical design & theory and chemical machinery) in South China University of Technology, respectively. On this basis, by using research approach of discipline cross to analysis and study the important common technologies in the field of advanced materials manufacture. The center has been established a strong scientific research team, and hosting 52 experts and scholars including 24 full professors, 10 associate professors, 3 senior engineer, and 2 stuff technicians. There are 1 academicians, 2 distinguished professors in cheung kong scholars, 4 awardees of the national science fund for distinguished young scholars, 1 chief scientist of 973 plan, 11 awardees of the new (cross) century talent supporting project by education ministry, and 2 person selected for new century talents project. Meanwhile, there are about 40 Ph. D. candidates, 200 master candidates and 10 post-doctoral fellows who are studying and working in the engineering center.

The engineering center has been undertaken a number of major scientific projects from national and local, and already obtained a series of self-developed innovative achievements. For examples, gained more than 40 national and provincial-level awards, applied for more than 100 patents (including 5 international invention patent license), and published more than 2000 high-quality research papers in SCI and EI journals.

The engineering center aims to address the great demand of energy, resources and environmental issues, and put priority on the research and development of green manufacture technology and equipment of polymer materials. The engineering center firstly proposed and developed the novel processing concept of vibration shear deformation and volume dynamic tensile deformation processing technology. The research contents have been systematically developed the theory of polymer processing engineering, and invented a number of novel processing techniques and equipment for the polymer processing. The relevant research results have been widely used in every sector of the national economy, and played an important role in promoting the restructuring and upgrading of the manufacturing and its related industry.
