On June 12, SCUT held a press conference at Liwu Building of Technology and Science to announce the university’s student recruiting plan for the Academic Year 2016/2017.
The total enrollments of this year will be 6,300, which generally keeps constant with previous years but still some adjustment are expected to be made. While the student recruiting scheme outside Guangdong province showed few changes compared to last year, the university plans to receive more local student of Guangdong province in 2016.
It is worth to notice that the admission process for the All-English-teaching Class at School of Civil and Transportation Engineering and the Electronic Sciences and Technology Innovation Class will be changed. Instead of the previous years’ doing of selecting all the candidates from the fresh students after they enrolled, from this year, part of the candidates will be directly admitted from the National Higher Education Entrance Examination if they get scores high enough in the exam.
Moreover, planned enrollments for architecture major, urban and rural planning major, the Automation Innovation Class and the Law Excellence Class are also increased.
According to SCUT Vice President Qiu Xueqing that responded to media’s frequently asked questions on international programs, SCUT has so far established more than 80 international student training programs with some of the best universities around the world, covering almost all the majors provided by the university.
More than 800 undergraduate students were dispatched abroad through these programs in 2015, and the number is expected to exceed 1000 in 2016.
Qiu Xueqing highlighted the 2+2 international programs, which is dual-degree programs including two years of study in a partner university following two years of study at SCUT. He noted that after the quality of the students has been proved by international partners like Rutgers University, these university will give priority to applicants from SCUT 2+2 programs when they are considering overseas students' applications.
2016 will also be the first year for SCUT as a pilot institution to trial the 6+3+1 mode to admit fresh college students, which is another hot spot of the media concerns on the press conference.
Designed as a supplement to the current admission system of the National Higher Education Entrance Examination, the 6+3+1 mode only take an applicant’s national exam score accounting for 60 percent of the overall score, while one’s performance during the interview conducted by the university accounts for 30 percent, and the performance in high school also accounts for 10 percent.
According to the university’s plan introduced by Qiu Xueqing, a first batch of 100 students will be admitted via this new mode this summer. A number of observers from high schools will be invited to witness the trial and to give their advices on the new system.
After the National Higher Education Entrance Examination was closed on June 8th, SCUT is holding its Campus Open Day on June 25th at Wushan Campus. Inviting fellow members of the Excellence 9 (E9) universities and a number of other major universities to join, the event is open to all applicants and their parents to have a tour in the SCUT campus.
