On June 28th and 29th, the students graduating from SCUT in 2016 were awarded degrees at Haili Sports and Recreational Center at Wushan Campus and the Grand Lecture Hall at University Town Campus. More than 8000 students said farewell to their alma mater and held the future in their hands with the fresh diplomas.\

The commencement ceremony was attended by SCUT Academic Degree Committee (ADC) Chairperson and SCUT President Professor Wang Yingjun, ADC Deputy Chairperson and SCUT Vice President Professor Qiu Xueqing, and ADC member and SCUT Vice President Professor Zhu Min, as the ceremony was emceed by Zhu Min.
Graduates representatives and faculty representatives from each school of SCUT were all on the ceremony, along with parents of some students, to witness one of the most crucial moments of the graduates’ lives.
The list of students awarded degrees was read by Qiu Xueqing. The names included 5,351 undergraduate students, 3,091 postgraduate students and 258 PhD Students.
Liu Tongtong from School of Physical Education, as a representative of College Students' Plan of Serving the West, was the first to have her tassel shifted by President Wang Yingjun. Studying in the SCUT campus was not the only story of Liu's college life. She used to be an exchange student to Taiwan and also worked as a volunteer teacher in high school.

"My dream is to be a teacher and my alma mater took me closer to it," she said.

After four years of developing interest in photographing, Sun Junyi, a major of tourism management, is now the Vice President of the SCUT Society of Photographers. When the graduation season came, she served her classmates as a photographer to help them capture the precious moments before leaving the campus. Some of her works was included in President Wang Yingjun’s PPT at the commencement ceremony.
Apart from the students' own stories, it was worth to mention that parents’ presence made the ceremony even more meaningful and special to their children, and Ke from School of Electronic and Information Engineering was one of these lucky children.
“I expect to see my little girl following the examples of SCUT alumnus,” her father said, “like Li Mantie, who gave an excellent speech on the ceremony.”
It was also a special day for the international students that are graduating from SCUT. After nine years of staying in this campus, Kenny from Seychelles now speaks Chinese quite fluently. The day he was conferred degree in architecture was a double blessing for him, as it was also the 40th anniversary of China- Seychelles Diplomatic Relations.

“The teachers here are very dependable, and I made a lot of friends here,” he said, “I am going back to my home country to be an architect, but I will never forget China and this university.”
