Objectives
This program aims to cultivate senior level specialized personnel who have a solid and broad basic theory and systematic in-depth knowledge of the subject; who are well-informed with the developing trends of the field of study; who have a good command of the latest research achievements in the field of machinery design, machinery manufacturing, mechanical and electrical engineering, measurement of manufacturing engineering orientation, information processing, quality fault detection and control instruments. Students are expected to possess the ability to conduct scientific researches independently and solve complicated engineering problems; and who are equipped with strong ability of management and the ability to make creative achievements in the field of mechanical engineering or instruments.

Cultivation Mode
Advisory system is applied in this doctoral program. Doctoral students should draw up a working program with the instruction of their supervisors in the first two weeks after registration. Students are supposed to participate in the medium term assessment according to Doctor Degree Candidate Medium-Term Assessment Method of South China University of Technology and complete the required social practices before the end of the third semester.
Dissertation
Doctoral students should draw up a working thesis plan, write literature review (8,000 words or above) and thesis proposals between the 8th and 15th weeks of the third semester. The reading amount should reach 80 pieces or above, among which no less than 30 pieces should be in English. Before applying for the thesis defense, students are required to publish academic papers officially according to Regulations of the Applications for Publishing Academic Paper of South China University of Technology. Thesis defense will be arranged according to Rules for the Implementation of Graduation Degrees of South China University of Technology and Regulations of the Applications for Thesis Defense of South China University of Technology on the completion of theses. Apart from the above regulations, the dissertation has to meet the requirements of the school on its academic nature, systematicness, creativity and writing.
