With the theme of "High Value Utilization Technology of Biomass Resources in Light Industry", the 271stChina Engineering Science and Technology Forum of the Chinese Academy of Engineering was held in South China University of Technology (SCUT) on December 2nd 2018. Song Gao, principle of SCUT, Zuoning Chen, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Yong Chen, Chairman of Guangdong Provincial Association of Science and Technology, 19 academicians such as Chen Kefu, President of 271stChina Engineering Science and Technology Forum, and more than 700 experts, teachers and students from universities, research institutes and enterprises all over the country participated in the forum. Xueqing Qiu, vice principal of SCUT, hosted the opening ceremony of the forum.
Song Gao introduced the university’s educational history and academic achievements in his speech. He said that light industry technology and engineering, food science and engineering disciplines, as the traditional dominant disciplines of SCUT, ranked the first in the multi-disciplinary evaluation and played a very important role in the "two-class" construction pattern of SCUT. It is hoped that through in-depth academic exchanges and ideological collisions among experts, profound enlightenment and useful reference will be brought to promote the scientific development of light industry and the overall upgrading of related industries. At the same time by taking this forum as an opportunity, scientific research cooperation and exchanges between SCUT and other brotherly universities and research institutes will be further promoted, the construction of "two-class" university will be accelerated which will make greater contributions to the construction of Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and the national economic and social development.
Kefu Chen said that the establishment of the forum theme was based on the Party Central Committee and the State Council's emphasis on the utilization of agricultural wastes as a resource and the emphasis of future research on the collection, transformation and utilization of agricultural and forestry organic wastes. At the same time, it was also based on the actual situation that the traditional light industry in China is constrained by resources and environment and urgently needs to be transformed and upgraded. All experts who reported their work in the Forum have made outstanding academic achievements in various fields of research. It is hoped that academic collision will be carried out in the course of exchanges, and innovative thinking will be generated, so as to achieve the integration of ideological innovation through multi-disciplinary cross-cutting.
Biomass resources are the main source of raw materials in key industries such as paper making, food, leather, fermentation and daily chemical industry. The high-value utilization technology of biomass resources has become a common key technology for transformation, upgrading and innovation development of the industry. This forum gathered the most famous experts and scholars in the field of light industry. From the perspective of industrial demand and discipline development, it fully exchanged the latest research results and development trend of high-value utilization technology of biomass resources in relevant industries, explored the synergistic development and synergy of technologies among different industries, in order to realize the scientific development in the field of light industry and the overall upgrading of related industries.
Experts from the fields of light industry and food made academic reports on high-value utilization technology of biomass resources, synthesis technology of biomass-based new materials, new technology of pulping and papermaking, new technology and new orientation of food processing, and made a deep discussion on the research and application of new technology in various fields of light industry. Among them, Kefu Chen made gave a presentation on the resource utilization of agricultural and forestry wastes.
Zuoning Chen and Yong Chen fully affirmed the theme of the forum, believing that the forum will promote the transformation and upgrading of relevant industries in light industry from the perspective of industrial integration, and contribute wisdom to the scientific development of light industry. At the same time, it is of great significance to the Rural Revitalization Strategy being implemented in China.
It was reported, in order to improve the innovation ability and management skills of Engineering Science and Technology in China and promote the exchange among different disciplines, the Chinese Academy of Engineering established the "China Engineering Science and Technology Forum" in 2000, and has successfully held more than 270 events so far. The forum was co-sponsored by SCUT, the Ministry of Environment and Textile Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the State Key Laboratory of Pulp and Paper Engineering of SCUT. Heads of the Party Committee Office (University Office), the Party Committee Propaganda Department, the Science and Technology Department, the School of Light Industry and Engineering, the School of Food Science and Engineering, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the School of Environment and Energy, and the School of Biological Science and Engineering participated in the forum.
