报告摘要:
In many distribution channels, an upstream supplier produces some key product components for the downstream manufacturer, which owns the brand and assembles the final products for sale to customers. Typically, in these channels, repair services are offered by the downstream manufacturer rather than the upstream supplier. In many markets, repair services are very lucrative, especially in business-to-business markets. Some suppliers may decide to enter the repair service market themselves. This paper examines the effects of such entry on the supplier and the manufacturer. Our analysis shows that the supplier will profitably enter the repair service market if the manufacturer's unit service cost is high and the supplier's unit production cost is low.If the supplier's unit production cost is high, the manufacturer can costlessly deter the supplier's entry by reducing the service price and raising the product price.Ifthe supplier's unit production cost is relatively high (but not too high to preclude its entry), the supplier's entry into the repair service market will lead to an all-win outcome for the supplier, the manufacturer, and the consumers. If the supplier's unit production cost is moderate, the supplier's capability to provide repair services will reduce its profits. Moreover, we find that the supplier's capability to provide repair services can induce it to improve the product quality.
