A delegation led by Yu Qijun, Vice Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee, along with persons in charge students’ work and director of personnel department inspected the School of Biology and Biological Engineering on May 12.

Lin Zhanglin, Dean of School of Biology and Biological Engineering, gave an account of the work over the past year, in particular the progress on teaching and students’ work, which had been taken as the basic duties and responsibilities of teachers since the leader group were newly appointed. Over the past year, the School has launched a number of important initiatives in teaching and student work including the implementation of curriculum reform, professors teach the main course, gradually expanding the innovation class; employing excellent doctoral students as part-time counselors, learning advanced universities’ management experience; full implementation of undergraduate tutor system for students career development design and strengthening the undergraduate research training, setting up “independent research”, focusing on two top domestic and international events (International Genetic Engineering Competition iGEM and college students challenge cup). In addition, a series of lectures with regard to the career development of students majoring in biology and biological engineering were held by the School.

Vice secretary Yu Qijun highly praised the work of the college and made a number of optimization opinions on the undergraduate tutor system. It was recommended to set up mentor selection criteria which request teachers to have politic stance. And the students’ privacy should be under protection. Various types of special events should be organized based on students’ professional characteristics. The undergraduates participating in public welfare activities should be rewarded public welfare credit points. At the end the distinguished guests and the leaders also discussed the details of undergraduate part-time counselor pilot work.
