time: 2015-09-30

2015 International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) was launched on 28th Sep., 2015 in Massachu-setts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Students from SCUT, three teams, won several awards, including a Bronze Medal, a Silver Medal and a Gold medal. Most excitingly, the team who won the Gold Medal also have been nominated for Best New Composite Part and nominated for Best Integrated Human Practices.

The project of the Gold Medal team named SCUT-China is Myocardial Guard, which challenge the issue in the field of cardiovascular disease. The project designed a serials of BioBricks carried on lentivirus to modified the NO-sGC-cGMP pathway in cardiomyocytes, providing a new genetic therapy to the myocardial injury.

For the sake that the research projects previously mostly focus on the procaryotic organism, the SCUT-China seems to be more competitive in innovation and scientific values because they focus on cardiovascular disease in mammalian cells.

It was reported that each nominated awards were nominated 5 in 259 teams, the SCUT-China indeed performed wonderfully in the competition. We congratulate to them and hope a better performance next year!
