PROGRESSIVE COLLAPSE PREVENTION OF DRIVE-IN STEEL STORAGE RACKS

Abstract: Unlike residential and commercial buildings, a more effective and rational approach to preventing progressive collapse in storage racks is to sacrifice the bay where a local failure initiates. The cost of a confined collapse of one bay is insignificant compared to the cost of a progressive collapse. This paper investigates the use of fuse connectors between the portal beams and the uprights of typical drive-in steel storage racks for preventing a local collapse in a bay from propagating to adjacent bays. Through nonlinear dynamic analysis, it identifies the topology and conditions where fuse connectors may be effective.

 

Dr. Lip Teh is a Senior Lecturer in civil engineering at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He received his Bachelor of Engineering in combined civil and mining engineering from the same university, and his PhD in structural engineering from the University of Sydney. He was a senior structural engineer with a former division of Siemens when he joined academia 5 years ago. He is a co-author of the Guidelines for Direct Second-order Inelastic Analysis of Steel Frames published by the American Society of Civil Engineers, and an editorial member of the Guide to Stability Design Criteria for Metal Structures sponsored by the Structural Stability Research Council USA. A number of his papers have led to new design procedures in the steel design standards in Australia and North America. He is an associate editor of ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, and is a member of two new committees on cold-formed steel and on structural steel. His current emphasis is on research topics that are likely to lead to useful applications in the real world, including bolted connections, climate resilient structures, modular construction, progressive collapse, retrofitting and strengthening of steel structures.

Lip Teh博士,澳大利亚卧龙岗大学土木工程高级讲师。Teh博士于卧龙岗大学获工学学士学位(土木与采矿工程专业),于悉尼大学获哲学博士学位(结构工程专业)。Teh博士曾经是西门子公司的高级结构工程师,于5年前加入卧龙岗大学。Teh博士是美国土木工程师协会出版的“钢框架二阶效应非弹性分析指南”的合著者之一,亦是美国结构稳定研究委员会资助的“金属结构稳定性设计指南”的编委之一。Teh博士许多文章的研究成果都被澳洲及北美的钢结构设计规范所采用。Teh博士现为美国土木工程师协会“Journal of Structural Engineering”杂志的副主编,亦是关于冷弯型钢和结构用钢两个委员会的成员。Teh博士目前的研究重点为有广泛应用前景的一些课题,包括螺栓连接节点、耐候性好的新型结构、模块化建筑、结构的连续倒塌问题、以及钢结构的修复和加固。
